I don’t always have internet access when I’m getting some work done sometimes it’s nice to get some work done under the shade of a tree in the parkthat’s where this comes in handy. It’s by no means intended to teach someone new to C, but it’s also not advertised as doing so. If you want to jump into C with no programming history, keep this in the back of your mind for later, but look for a different book.

A quick read of this will bring it all back to you. I took a class on C back in the early 90s, but ended up working more with Pascal, then Perl and kirch-priz settled into Python for over a decade funny that I just noticed that they all start with ‘P’.
I found myself in a situation where I need to write and modify some C code. Refsrence pulled out my old C books, and starting wading through pages and pages of programming history, and the umpteenth retelling of the ‘moth in the line printer’ story.
I didn’t need to learn how to program, I just needed a reference to quickly look up pocekt. This book is perfect, and I’m of the opinion now that I’m going to stick to pocket references for everything but the most alien of subjects.
Thank you O’Reilly for putting this together. Presents the key points of C syntax, and also the significant restrictions, which are often discussed inadequately in textbooks – the contrasting scopes of variables in blocks, functions and files, and the automatic search for prototypes and definitions by the compiler. Does not cover C I like to get information from a lot of different sources on the same subject. Sometimes one book makes a great point that others have either left out or didn’t explain so well.
So, for me, I deem my better books as those I get the most answers from after this hunt for the truth. I would strongly suggest anyone who really wants to learn this material should have a copy, maybe multiple copies!
The price is awesome. Kitch-prinz President of Cundiff Group, llc. I use this to keep my C fresh in my mind. It is a great book and is very helpful! Handy, pocked sized reference. Once you get to know your way around, it helps with many different areas of study, such as data structures, reverse engineering and assembly. Limited somewhat by C99, this pocket reference remains a useful, quick overview of basic C.
