The ambiguity in the morals and the plot have kept this work very present in my mind. Una emphatically asserts that, because she never moved away from the town where she met Ray, she’s also served fifteen years for his crime.
I recommend it for anyone who has the stomach for the topic, it’s written beautifully. The plain black book cover perfectly describes the darkness against the light of the text. I can’t wait to see this play sometime.
After serving his sentence for sexual abuse of a minor, Ray changed his name, moved to another city, and rebuilt his life from scratch, which he could do because he was convicted well before the creation of present-day sex offender registries. I was so horrified but so compelled by what was harrowet that I had the whole thing read in an hour. Yet it doesn’t really feel ambiguous because it’s so short and kind of deliberately underdeveloped – so intent on making youthe reader, think that it doesn’t really seem to think anything of its own.
I started reading and couldn’t stop. God, I wish I could harrlwer that! Not sure how I feel about this play or the characters within.

I thought you were strong. Ray was then arrested and imprisoned. The play asks many questions and allows us, the audience, to provide some of the answers albeit through much debate. When they began and ended their sexual relationship, Una was 12 and Ray was I’m very excited for the film adaptation, especially the casting of Ben Mendelsohn and Rooney Mara.

It looked skinny, and I wanted to finish an entire play while I was stopped in at the bookstore waiting for my car to be resuscitated. David Harrower’s modern masterpiece has the linguistic daring of Caryl Churchill and the intimacy of David Hare’s Skylight, with a whole lot of horror mixed in.
I was curious about why Harrower titled the play “Blackbird. We saw the original UK version on the stage and read the amended US version.

It may be one of those cases where this is actually an blaackbird to think and the artwork depends on the viewer… It has been said that the onlooker is often, maybe always more important than the object of art itself So if I dismiss this and say, well blackbifd is about a much older person who took advantage of a minor and his punishment, it could be a mistake.
Perhaps… A comedian in disrepute- which may highlight the problem of treating too lightly a serious, moral and life issue- was talking about the need to understand and engage with blackbbird child kidnapper, if only to get to save the children involved.
